Tenancy - Joint Tenancy - Tenancy in Common

There are three different types of property ownership.

Property may be owned but it is owned as a tenancy: either as a sole tenant or as a joint tenant or as a tenant in common.

A sole tenant's interest passes as part of that estate.
A joint tenant's interest extinguishes on death so the surviving tenant inherits; this will not benefit another (eg one�s child).
A tenant in common owns that interest outright and so can pass this onto another, but may delay receipt in favour of a surviving life tenant.
Care Home costs are assessed from one's own estate. You may currently protect yours letting your partner protect theirs. The trustees of a life tenant may have the discretion to provide for more, however that power remains with them.
